Fall turkey season opened today, and Man did we have fun! We worked up the back side of the mountain and found lots of scratchings an poop. We jumped three gobblers and a six point whitetail {who was working a doe} at the same time...But them ol gobblers were not coming back up. They courtesy gobbled back but they were not coming back. We worked our way down calling lightly and headed up to the ridge behind the barn. We found another flock...and man were they talkative. They were strung out all along the ridge above us. Me an Jr. headed up wile Dad headed down. We cammoed up {dumped the florescent orange}and started callin. They were closest to Dad and he called them over and wacked a hen. He scattered then in two directions. When things calmed down I called softly and a jake answered from below. I coaxed him up...and after hanging up behind a brier bush for five minutes...he stepped out and Jr. wacked him at 40 yds. We retrieved his bird and let things calm down again. I called again and another jake gobbled farther down two ridges. I scurried down one ridge...scootched in and called. He gobbled and came up, but he stood in a no shot zone and went back over the ridge...so I crawled foward to a blow down {ever kneel on a multifloral rose bush...ouch} and called him out into the open. I dumped him at 60 yds. Turkey Guns and Turkey loads have come a long way since I started turkey hunting in 84. On the way back to Jr. I picked up Dad and we did a photo shoot {two convient stumps and a timer} then headed home to a hot lunch.
Thats 32 lbs of birds.
