We got out a little late to our favorite turkey killin field this morning. Jr. set up in our ambush spot while I set the decoys out. It was just breaking light. We let things settle down a little, then I called some tree talk softly...three or four Jakes let loose with double and triple gobbles. We worked them up good, they were gobblin like krazy. Then I hear a hen putt behind us...I putt back and the Jakes let loose...but I hear the hen putt again and she's around us heading up the hill toward the Jakes. I yelp and putt...she clucks and I know she is heading right into them boys, all gobblin stops. It's quiet for a long while till we hear them gobble again, this time moving away from us up the mountain. I let loose with all the hen talk I had ...loud and did it again. We heard a gobble and a hard cluck closer this time, I let loose with boss hen talk and stopped calling. time to sit still. We waited and I finally heard the leaves rustling.... I nudged Jr. an whispered here they come. Sure nuff...here comes the real "boss hen"...with four Jakes in tow. She brings em right to the edge of the field... she sees the decoys then clucks and heads right at em. The Jakes freeze, then puff out. She crosses the ditch and puts a good eye on the decoys ...{oh fug}.... I tell Jr. pick one an put him down now...she's gonna bolt. She spins around and clucks as Jr took the 35 yd. shot. gettin laid off work does have it's advantages..

I went right back to our "ol killin field" this morning, dark and early. I tried something different this time by adding a Jake decoy to my two hen decoy spread. The boys were roosted on the ridge above the field...when they gobbled, I thought game on! I gave them a little "tree talk" and they gobbled back... all crazed up. Out of the corner of my eye I see a young hen far off behind me. I give her one "boss hen" call and she leaves the field. The boys let loose gobblin again so I gives em my best "happy hen" and wait. Sure nuff here they come...four Jakes. They can't see the decoys yet and they stop. I give em a sweet little "purr" and they commit to coming in. I couldn't tell which one was the dominant bird till they saw the decoys. The boss puffed and strutted then charged my decoys. I dropped him just one second before tried to pounce on my Jake decoy. He was definitely the dominant bird of that field. His wing tips were wore right off from struttin, fightin an fuggin. This tells me that there are no slammer gobblers in this area if a 17 1/2 lb. 5" beard Jake is doing all the breeding. I'm gonna have to hunt some where else if I wanna fill my bonus tag with big ol long beard.

My Boys Did Well. It was a perfect fall day...the sun shining...most of the snow gone. The forest floor wet for sneekin round. The Turks' were very cooperative today and as talkative as I've ever heard in the fall.....but still hard too call. We busted them up twice and took two. I'm livin large...watchin my boys hunt together....
